There was strong interest in the original manga that it continued with a prequel and then at least 2 sequels to the original story/manga. The original manga started in 1990 and ran for 33 tankouban volumes. So the anime is from 1993, how old is the manga and is it still running? It's always interesting knowing a bit about the manga as well. The anime was pretty popular in Asia when it was first boardcast, it is ashame that they haven't made a season 2 for the anime, let's hope they might do in the future. Season 3 comic is 12 volumes and season 4 comic is 16 volumes, it carry on from season 1 storys, and this comic finished in Japan in 2003. Season 2 comic is 5 volumes and it talks about the main 3 character Toshi, kenji & kazuhiro, during the Junior High school years. In terms of comic Season 1, I think it is 33 volumes and it is what this anime story base on, unfortunately this anime ended before the last few volumes comes out in Japan, so you won't see one of the domestic match and when they goes oversea to play friendly. It wouldn't be implausible to say that even if football wasn't popular in Japan by that stage, CT might have been a reason, or even the catalyst, for the growth in interest. IIRC they'd never even qualified for the World Cup back then. I can't imagine football having been very popular in Japan in 1993. The manga should have ended by now but i'll let someone else clarify that before jumping to conclusions. Think there are 3 series in the Shoot! manga available, each lasting 16 volumes. Im pretty sure the anime and manga were both quite popular throughout asia. Did either the manga or the anime "do well" in Japan?.

That will definitely be high on my priority list! I'm a bit surprised that Saizen decided to sub a show as old as this but just goes to show their love of the genre and their commitment of bringing it to the masses. You guys have made my day.ĭidn't know Ashita no Joe was planned.

Speaking of sports, Ashita no Joe is the anime series I want to see more then any other and that wish is finally going to come true thanks to Saizen. I might have to check it out but perhaps after the series is released.

I found out there was a live action film of this made not too long ago known as 'Hit The Goal'. A definite improvement over Wild Striker (not that that was bad mind!). Oh and I love the font being used to sub this show.

Saizen have very similar tastes to me as far as anime goes so I'm sure this will be an enjoyable show. I can see the animation and art style putting some off but it seems that there may be a good narrative underneath that will win people over. Thanks to Saizen for bringing us this series.
